SA Baptists and Marriage

By on September 6, 2017

We recognize that sexuality is God’s gift to all persons.  All people, regardless of their sexual practice or sense of sexual orientation, are individuals of great worth to God.  We affirm God’s grace is available to all.  The ministry, guidance, love and acceptance of a community of Christian people should be available to all people in their struggles for human fulfilment, as well as the spiritual and emotional care of that community that enables reconciling relationships with God, with others and the self. In Christian teaching, although all persons are sexual beings whether they are married or not, sexual relations are only clearly affirmed in the marriage bond between a male and a female.

Our Baptist movement here in South Australia, in line with our national and international Baptist families, continues to hold to an understanding of and belief in marriage as the covenantal relationship between a man and a woman freely given for life.

Baptist Churches of South Australia affirms the statement from the Australian Baptist Ministries National Council which can be found here.

While it is important to express the ‘position’ of Baptist Churches of SA, it is equally important that this topic be addressed in a pastorally sensitive manner with respect to the tone and posture of our engagement. The State Executive Minister has written to all our church leaders on this aspect and his letter can be found here.
