Discipleship in a sexualised world
Nathan Randall
Erin Spavin
Our sexualized world provides challenges for leaders to respond in appropriate and productive ways. In this workshop, Nathan and Erin will create space to further define real-world Discipleship, focusing specifically on how we disciple the vast range of people (ages, experience, backgrounds) in an increasingly complex culture.
From caring for singles to structures that protect our young vulnerable people, how do leaders think about responding ethically to the dilemmas of a highly sexualized world? Is it possible to point others to Jesus, even if it means embarrassing, awkward and sometimes heartbreaking conversations? What resources exist for leaders dealing with complex sexualized scenarios that present in our church communities?
*Please be advised that this elective will involve discussions of a sexual nature and is intended only for adult audiences 18 years or older. The elective may also include discussions around sexual assualt which may be distressing for some individuals.*

Nathan Randall + Erin Spavin
Nathan and Erin are both Pastors at Enfield Baptist Church. They share a passion to see individuals meet and know Jesus, and grow as followers of Christ. Erin and Nathan believe it is essential for disciples to experience authentic and genuine faith (in community) in order to abide in Jesus with longevity and to become increasingly emotionally healthy people.

Generational Discipleship
Sam Thomson
Scott Berry
As much a conversation as an elective. Sam Thomson has been doing youth ministry since the 1970s which makes him sound old, but the reality is that he continues to have the vibrance of the youth group he leads. Scott Berry will be hosting what may look like a live podcast digging into some of the acquired wisdom and lessons learned from Sam’s decades of working with young people as a chaplain and youth pastor.

Sam Thomson
Sam is the Youth Pastor of the Blackwood Hills Baptist Church. He loves the Australian bush. Sam has been instrumental in BHBC developing camping ministries to enable young people to connect with each other, the land and Jesus. In the process of this he had discipled countless young people into faith and leadership.
Discipleship in a world made of money
Mark LeCornu
Mark intends to explore some core principles of financial discipleship within our faith communities and in equipping future generations for investing in eternal purposes.

Mark LeCornu
Mark is Managing Director of MTC Advisory, a business services and advisory firm in Adelaide. Mark and his team have served as the Auditor of Baptist Churches SA for a number of years and provides advice to the movement on a range of matters, including financial, taxation and governance matters.
Mark is a passionate husband of Renee and Father to their three young children. The family is actively involved at Richmond Baptist Church.
Mark’s vocational passions are supporting organisations and enterprises that reflect Kingdom values and re-thinking conventional approaches to providing professional services.
Marginalised: being with those on the margins
Shane Austin
Walking and working with those on the margins brings with it challenges; external challenges (environmental, it can be rough and tough) and internal challenges (our ways of thinking, our language, and Christian cultures).
Starting from a place of who we believe in -Jesus Christ- not what we believe in (opinions, cultural, and/or theological positions), we will briefly examine Jesus Christ’s engagement on the margins, the impact on those He sat and ate with; and the impact it had on Him and His disciples.
We will then have an interactive discussion looking at the following questions.
- What do we, or can we learn from those on the margins?
- As we approach ministering with the marginalised, what biases and baggage do we take with us, from inside the temple/church?
- What are the ways that the institutional church, including the Baptist movement, can engage and minister on the margins in a pluralistic society, that genuinely leads to people reaching their full potential?

Shane Austin
Life and work have found Shane in places far (China) and near (Adelaide). Shane, Anne, and Luke (youngest child of 3) moved from Melbourne at the end of 2021 where Shane took up the role of CEO for Baptist Care SA.
Having worked in media, and medical fields, as a funder in philanthropy, and social welfare in China, Shane has always been drawn to the margins, working, and walking with those who have been disenfranchised, and those at risk of harm. At Baptist Care SA, Shane has the privilege and responsibility to work with a diverse team to see justice and positive change take place across our community, focusing on those on the margins.
Discipleship Making in Culturally Diverse Communities
Rachael Foster
Darryl Bishop
With the increasing cultural diversity of our neighbourhoods, this is an opportunity to build cultural awareness as we step “into the riverbed” of intercultural discipleship, open to learning, transformation and growth together as followers of Jesus.
How does culture impinge on our values, the way we communicate and relate to people from a different cultural heritage on the journey of discipleship?

Rachael Foster
Rachael leads the Church Pathways Team for Baptist Care SA, helping to build relationships between Baptist Care, churches, and communities, and supporting SA Baptist churches in engaging in unique expressions of mission. Rachael has a background as an English as a Second Language teacher and is passionate about the way language can be used to facilitate connection and relationships, especially in churches and community settings. Rachael also works as the Community Engagement Pastor at Broadview Baptist Church.

Darryl Bishop
Darryl Bishop is currently the Intercultural Ministries Facilitator with Baptist Churches SA and a member of Camden Baptist Church which includes an International Connect ministry. His role at BCSA includes supporting and resourcing our culturally and linguistically diverse churches and pastoral leaders. He is also a member of the ABM Intercultural and CaLD Communities Taskforce. Darryl is passionate to see the church in its life and mission continuing to move beyond homogeneity to reflecting and embracing the cultural diversity of our neighbourhoods. “If the kingdom of God is not segregated why on earth the church!” Before moving into his present role, Darryl was the Multicultural & Seniors Pastor at Rostrevor Baptist which included pastoral support of a Chinese congregation and Tamil, African and Korean Fellowships. He has also been involved for a number of years in community development and educational ministry in India. Darryl is married to Tricia (Pastor of Camden Baptist). They have three daughters (including co-presenter Rachael Foster) and seven grand-children.
